Zig Memory System Calligraphy markers
Great permanent marker pens. Wonderful to use when addressing envelopes because you know they will not smear when going through the postal system or with water. Using them for Randall Hasson's "Layered Journal" because they are permanent markers

Mostly Awesome
The fact that these are sold separately is such a godsend. I’ve tried many different calligraphy markers and Zig Memory System is one of my favorites. I purchased the full set about a year or so ago and now one of the markers from that set has decided to quit on me. And of course it’s the black. I love that I can just replace the color I need without having to buy another set or pack—especially when it comes to an essential color like black. Convenience aside, I like these markers in particular because the ink doesn’t bleed through the paper as much, the colors are rich and vibrant in pigment (the black covers pencil well), and the tips are sturdy and stiff. That’s not to say they don’t smush and fray with use—they do—but they seem to hold up better than others when it comes to that. The corners of the chisel tips produce nice crisp lines, and will for a while if taken care of properly. The dual-ended tip is cool, and I know a lot of calligraphy markers are made with it, but this is where these markers in particular lose some appeal to me. This is because the sizing options (2mm and 5mm) are a bit of a jump. 2mm is too small (very little stroke width contrast—not great for practicing) and 5mm is too big (can hardly fit a word on a page). The 2mm tip is also not very fun to use if it sustains any damage or typical wear and tear, like all pens do, just because it’s so small already. Any little damage to its shape is very noticeable and makes it near impossible to get clean crisp strokes out of it. I don’t use it much for this reason. I’d definitely say the bold size options these pens offer make them much more ideal for final work, in that regard. ZIG makes a dye-based version of 24 colors with medium-sized tip options that works better if you’re just looking to practice with the rainbow. That being said, they’re still a great pen, especially compared to what’s out there. The number of color options this set has is fantastic, and they hold up well for what they are. They’re also one of the only pens I can find with a tip size as large as 5mm (so that’s great when I need it!). I’d definitely recommend them to serious calligraphers—but not for beginners just looking to practice. Again: look for their dye-based option. Tip sizes are closer to 2.0–3.5mm: much more practical!
