Pergamena Parchment
With roots tracing back to 1550 in Eisenburg, Germany, Pergamena is a family-owned tannery that has been committed to excellence for centuries. Now based in the Hudson River Valley of New York, Pergamena has carried forward its legacy of craftsmanship through both leather and parchment production. Since 1972, Karl Meyer led the company in the production of fine leathers for a wide range of products including hand-bound books, piano action, shoes, and even lederhosen.
In 1999, Karl’s son Jesse, drawing on his background in sculpture and design, launched Pergamena, reviving and refining the ancient craft of hand-making parchment. Under the leadership of Jesse Meyer, this small tannery continues to honor its centuries-old traditions while embracing modern innovations.
Pergamena is unique in its dedication to sustainability. Using animal hides that are a byproduct of the food industry, Pergamena not only prevents waste but also operates with a regenerative approach that treats the environment with the same dignity and respect as they treat their employees and customers.
Their parchment-making process uses minimal chemical intervention, and their leather products are free of heavy metals. With a focus on lowering water usage and reducing waste, Pergamena remains committed to responsible practices, ensuring their products not only reflect bespoke quality but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
