Uncommon Numbers Manual edited by Brenda Casey Zoby
Designed as a companion to Uncommon Numbers and Uncommon Numbers II, this manual offers the kind of in-depth analysis of numerals that has been traditionally reserved for letterforms. Each contributing artist, from Shelia Waters and Carl Rohrs to Julian Waters and Georgina Artigas, begins their chapter with a disussion of a calligraphic hand's general characteristics, followed by exemplars and detailed instructional notes on the numerals themselves.
Fundamental instruction is not provided in Uncommon Numbers Manual, and this book is aimed at students who already have some experience with calligraphy and have an interest in expanding their calligraphic numeral knowledge.
"The secret to making beautiful numbers that blend seamlessly with your letterforms is attention to detail. Using the same weight, relative widths, and slope will give numerals the same visual character as the letters beside them." ––Introduction, Brenda Casey.
Edited by Brenda Casey Zoby. Spiral-bound; 79 pages; 8.5" x 5.5"
Two additional volumes are available: Uncommon Numbers and Uncommon Numbers II, as well as a set of all three books. It is worth noting that these additional books are not instruction manuals, but rather showcase numerals from world-renowned calligraphers for the purpose of inspiration rather than instruction.
