A monogram is a device made by overlapping or combining two or more letters to form one symbol. For our purposes, we will also use monograms consisting of a single letter. When a monogram is duplicated and rotated it becomes another type of design: a calligraphic pinwheel or snowflake. Also called "callipins."

Morphing Monograms takes you on a step-by-step journey through the creation of these unique designs. Explore variations, reversals, and use the full breadth of your calligraphic tools to craft unexpected and remarkable images. But that's just the beginning! Morentz and Friedman invite you to digitize your designs, revealing uncharted creative territories through the power of Adobe® Photoshop®. With a gallery featuring renowned calligraphers, this book is not only a tutorial but a celebration of limitless artistic expression. Whether for logos, design elements, or personal projects, let this book be your guide to a world of innovation and beauty in calligraphy.

“Over the subsequent years I found myself often doodling with one or two letters and rotating them any number of times. Basic letterforms were expanded, fragmented, exaggerated, compressed, altered, and manipulated, all the while maintaining an eye to the critical interaction of line and space . . . I then incorporated the exercise into alphabet workshops that I taught, allowing students to utilize the forms they were practicing into a fun design project, while simultaneously reinforcing critical principles of successful graphic design.” ––Barry Morentz, Preface.

Spiralbound hardcover; 96 pages; 10.25” x 9.25”
