Gillott 404 with Spring Reservoir Nib
NOTE : I'm new to dip pens, so I'm experimenting with all this! Gillott 404 with Spring Reservoir Nib : This nib was an interesting deviation from the standard clip-on reservoir, making total sense but not perfectly implemented. I think cleaning the tip is necessary to get the storage oil off, but cleaning the entire tip with spring does the opposite effect, in fact holding on to the ink in the spring instead of letting it flow. I watched many videos about the invisible 'oil' or coat to keep these nibs from rusting in storage before being sold, and how it resists the inks ability to cling to the nib. So I washed all my older nibs with warm water and mild soap, and the ones that continued not retraining ink I also wiped down with alcohol which did the trick. This particular one I also agitated in a 'dinky dip' bottle with alcohol to get the spring as well. When using it to write normally, the ink storage is amazing. Far more than all the other nibs even with the flat clip-on reservoirs. But as i was making my swatches, I realized as it stopped writing, it still held quite a lot of ink. Getting that to let go was a pain. I tried tapping it gently on the page where it ran out, I tried doing just the point in water to release it (which worked a little every time), but overall, once it refused all these methods, it still contained a decent ball of ink in the spring. Without the ability to remove the spring for adjustment or cleaning, the ink left in the creases just didn't want to come out, even in agitation with water or alcohol. I believe if I had left the spring 'oiled' and just washed the very tip of the nib where the make contact with the spring, it might work much better. As it is, I don't know how to 're-coat' the spring only to try this out. On this note, i was told by their amazing customer service that there is a version of this separate called 'toms studio "one dip wonder"' which is literally a spring like this with a tiny powerful magnet that holds the same excess of ink, but is easily removable and washable, and can be used on nearly any nib that needs a reservoir.
