The Hunt 512 is a large, stiff, bowl-shaped nib with an extra-fine point and moderate flex. Can produce decent hairlines but not much line variation. Great for ruling and modern calligraphy styles, as well as for use on textured papers. This nib is an excellent choice for beginner calligraphers.
The 512 may not fit in most straight holders; we recommend the Speedball Straight Holder or one of our adjustable oblique holders.

Meh.
I believe this is the first nib I ever used. I learned how to draw and a little how to write with it, but now that I’m much more experienced, I can’t say I’d ever use it for much in the future. It’s stiff and bulky and just not that much fun to write with. As the description indicates, it offers very little contrast between strokes and has very little flexibility (there’s actually no flex points on the sides of this one like most other nibs have), so it may be good for beginners in that regard. It’ll also take abuse well (I still have my first ever nib, in near perfect condition…mainly because I don’t use it anymore), which is a plus when starting out with learning how to prep and clean nibs.
