I ordered 7 of these, sizes 1, 2, 3, 3A, 4, 4A and 5. These pens are the epitome of simplicity and functionality. Although they might seem a bit crude, there are some rather subtle and sophisticated aspects to the design, for instance the precise relationship between the upper and lower nib plates that allows ink to flow through a hairline opening when the slightest pressure is applied to the page. With a little usage, I was able to start "pushing" the pens on some strokes, as the sharpness of the edges wore down. One thing I like about these pens is that you can use just a small amount of ink in a bottle cap and don't need to dip the whole pen into a bottle or inkwell. TIP - Before writing, remove any ink from the lower plate by QUICKLY stroking it across a surface, such as a tissue wrapped around your finger. (I confess, I just use my fingertip, then wipe it on a tissue.) I say QUICKLY, because, as per design, the ink will be drained from the reservoir almost instantly if the tip is allowed to touch an absorbent surface for more than a few milliseconds. Stroke the pen parallel to the nib/handle, so that just the lower metal plate touches, and not the "business end". Paper & Ink has great prices and availability on these products, which are sometimes a bit hard to find, with shipping from England and higher prices.
