Using Mixed Colored Media on Coquille Board with Scott Rawlins

This workshop is a step into mixing graphite and watercolor for a rich and powerful composition. This is exactly why we will take time to question and explore composition until we find its best representation to suit the story we want to invest in our work. Then we discuss the proportion and the balance between the monochrome, the color, and the white space, understanding how the mix of techniques serves a graphic approach. I will demonstrate working in both techniques, also sharing examples of my work, and talking over the various choices of composition. This workshop is suitable for advanced and intermediates, looking to sharpen their skills as well as to better understand the mixing of techniques.

Supplies:

  • Coquille board -- supplied by the instructor
  • Tracing paper (2 or 3 pieces, 9" x 12")
  • Soft pastels (I will bring a box but if participants want a specific brand, they can bring them – a box of about 24 sticks) NOT oil pastels!
  • Non-water-soluble colored pencils – both soft (Prismacolor) and hard (Verithin), set of 24 of the former -- including Indigo blue, Tuscan red (in the set) and cream and a set of 12 of the latter
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Watercolor brushes -- 1/2" or 1/4" flat & #0 round -- sable or equivalent
  • White vinyl eraser
  • X-Acto knife OR something with a thin, sharpish edge such as an old credit card, small metal ruler (about 6”) or a palette knife
  • Graphite pencils (4H, HB, 4B)
  • Drafting or white paper tape
  • White gouache
  • Watercolors (limited palette)
  • Palette or palette paper (a small white ceramic plate will work)
