Painting Structure! with Jean Emmons

What takes a painting from good to great? Painting structure! The sculptural qualities of gourds offer us an opportunity for an in-depth study of what makes or breaks a painting, while a contemporary approach with watercolor can lead to vibrant color and unusual compositions. Topics covered will include various aspects of color and light on form. As we paint gourds in watercolor on paper, this workshop will consist of multiple lectures, demonstrations and lots of individual attention

Supply list:

  • Please bring your normal watercolor supplies: paints, palette (in order to lay out “skins” of color, a butcher tray palette or white China plate works well), small water jar, paper towels, pencil, kneaded eraser, artists tape
  • Most Important Item – A Good Brush: This must be relatively new and able to keep a sharp point. I use Da Vinci Maestro Series 35 size #2, #3 or #4 or Raphael Designers Kolinsky Series 8408 (not 8404!) size #2, #3 or #4. Sometimes these can be hard to find in the US, Winsor & Newton Series 7 pointed round #3 is good also.
  • If you prefer Synthetic Brush options: Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolor synthetic POINTED round sable brushes, size #2 or The Billy fine tip synthetic, size # 2
  • A Lifting Brush: A small synthetic or bristle brush for lifting (Size #1 Rounds or smaller) Da Vinci Series 7782 TOP ACRYL Round Size #1 or the “Eradicator” by Billy Showell are good
  • Paper: 2 sheets 9 x 12 Fluid 100 Hot Press 140# watercolor paper or comparable.
  • Tracing Paper:   4 sheets 9 x 12 Canson is good
  • A Sakura Pigma Micron 05 Pen Black to ink your drawing on tracing paper to transfer. (I will bring a small light box)
  • Optional supplies: magnifier or head loupe if you need it, a piece of 9 x 12 mat board or foam core to tape your watercolor paper to, a few small pieces of paper for paint testing and cover sheets
  • If you are bringing a portable cordless lamp for another workshop, please bring it.
